Sciatica Treatment in St Paul

When Sciatica Lingers After Everything You’ve Tried

woman touching upper leg in painSciatica can turn a long drive or a weekend run into something you brace for. Some patients contact us after trying physical therapy or steroid injections, only to find that their symptoms keep returning.

Dr. Shilpa Parikh and Dr. Anthony Heaverlo start by listening. At Vitality Chiropractic & Wellness Center, they’ll ask what you’ve already tried, how you’ve responded and how your symptoms affect daily life. Along with examining how your spine and muscles are functioning, they may consider whether other health or lifestyle factors are relevant to your care.

Looking Beyond the Pain in Your Leg

Sciatica doesn’t always have one simple explanation. Training habits, prolonged sitting, repetitive lifting and other everyday demands may influence symptoms. For a parent, that might mean lifting a toddler, getting a child into a car seat or spending hours driving between activities.

The doctors also may also review your health history, medications and available lab work when appropriate. Depending on what they find, nutritional factors may be considered alongside the physical side of your symptoms.

Same Symptoms, Different Disc

One patient had previously undergone surgery on one side before similar symptoms appeared on the other. Her examination indicated that a different disc level was involved, so the decompression settings were adjusted to focus on that area.
The patient came in three times a week for two weeks. Her symptoms improved with care, and she did not proceed with another surgery at that time. Individual responses to care vary.

A Care Plan Based on What They Find

Treatment isn’t identical for every person with sciatica. Depending on your examination findings and history, care may include spinal decompression, intersegmental traction, ultrasound or other therapeutic modalities. When a disc appears irritated, the doctors may use gentler approaches and avoid high-velocity adjustments.

Once you’re more comfortable, they’ll assess the muscles and other structures along the path of the sciatic nerve. Instrument-assisted adjustments may be used when appropriate, while acupuncture may be incorporated for some patients.

Signs Your Sciatica Needs a Closer Look

If leg pain keeps returning, interferes with normal activities or has you regularly relying on medication to get through the week, consider having it evaluated. Sudden loss of bladder or bowel control requires immediate medical attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I try to avoid surgery for sciatica?

Some patients want to explore conservative options before surgery. The doctors can review your history, imaging and recommendations from other providers, then determine whether chiropractic care or other conservative approaches may be appropriate. Referral may be recommended when needed.

My X-ray looked normal. Why am I still in pain?

An X-ray primarily shows bones and the spacing between them rather than the discs themselves. In some cases, advanced imaging such as an MRI may provide more information about whether a disc problem is contributing to your symptoms.
