When You Still Don’t Feel Like Yourself

A concussion can happen during a hockey game, after a fall, or in a car accident. Sometimes, the symptoms linger long after the initial injury. You might struggle to concentrate, feel unusually tired, or notice that everyday activities aren’t as easy as they used to be.

At Vitality Chiropractic & Wellness Center, we understand how frustrating it can be when you’re told everything looks normal, but you still don’t feel right. Our St Paul and Prior Lake chiropractic team takes time to listen, examine your concerns, and determine what care may be appropriate.

Recognizing Symptoms That May Be Overlooked

Concussions don’t always look the same. Some people experience headaches or dizziness, while others notice changes they wouldn’t immediately connect to a head injury.

Common symptoms include:

  • Headaches or sensitivity to light and sound
  • Brain fog, memory difficulties, or trouble concentrating
  • Dizziness, balance problems, or nausea
  • Sleep disturbances and unusual fatigue
  • Blurred vision or changes in smell
  • Increased anxiety or emotional changes

A normal CT scan or MRI doesn’t necessarily rule out a concussion. These tests help identify certain structural injuries, but they don’t capture every change in how someone feels or functions.

Looking Beyond the Initial Injury

Dr. Shilpa Parikh, DC, believes that understanding someone’s history is just as important as discussing their current symptoms.

Our evaluation may include neurological and orthopedic testing, cranial nerve assessment, reflexes, balance, coordination, eye tracking, and memory. For established patients, previous examination findings may provide a useful comparison.

Even an older injury deserves attention. A fall years ago or a previous sports concussion may be relevant when reviewing ongoing symptoms.

A Thoughtful Approach to Your Care

Concussions require appropriate medical assessment and individualized recovery guidance. Chiropractic care doesn’t treat the brain injury itself, but our team can evaluate associated neck pain, muscle tension, and other musculoskeletal concerns.

Depending on your findings, recommendations may include gentle chiropractic techniques, exercises, or complementary services such as craniosacral therapy and acupuncture for separate concerns. These therapies aren’t substitutes for evidence-based concussion rehabilitation.

For persistent symptoms, we may recommend further assessment or coordinate with your medical providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can concussion symptoms last for months?

Yes. Some people experience symptoms for several months or longer. Persistent symptoms warrant medical reassessment and an individualized recovery plan.

Can I have a concussion if my MRI is normal?

Yes. Concussions commonly occur without abnormalities appearing on standard imaging.

When can my child return to sports?

A healthcare professional trained in concussion management should guide a gradual return to sports. Athletes should not return to contact activities until medically cleared.
